Some Treatment Options For Breast Cancer

When you are first told that you have breast cancer, it can be alarming. You might have a million questions yet at the same time, be unable to process a lot that is being talked about in that first meeting with the doctor about your cancer. Surgery

In a lot of cases, surgery for breast cancer treatment involves the removal of the breasts. This is called a mastectomy. If the doctor feels that there is the option of leaving the breasts, he or she may perform a lumpectomy. This is when only the lump of cancer and a little bit of the surrounding tissue is removed. Those who undergo a mastectomy for their breast cancer treatment may have the option to have reconstructive surgery once they have been given clearance to do so. Not everyone will opt to do this though, as it is usually considered a cosmetic procedure that they would have to pay out of pocket for.

Radiation Treatment

Radiation treatment is a very common form of breast cancer treatment that a lot of people partake in. This type of treatment involves the use of high-energy rays to kill off the cancer cells. This usually comes after having surgery to remove the majority of the cancer. The treatment with radiation is then usually used to kill off the remaining or leftover cancer cells that were not taken out during surgery. The location of such cells may be found in the armpit or chest.

Chemotherapy Treatment

While the option of chemo does keep the patient from being exposed to a lot of energy rays, the medication given is rather strong and it can come with some side effects, including hair loss and extreme fatigue. Some people handle it well though, so it is something to discuss with your doctor. It is important to know that in this type of breast cancer treatment, a patient usually has to go through a couple rounds of treatment, with a break in-between each round.

Make sure that you are writing down any questions or concerns that you have so you can discuss them with your doctor at your next appointment. As you receive information at that appointment, you will want to make sure that you are jotting down some notes. You might also want to take a close friend or family member with you to your appointments, as they can help remember all of the things that are discussed.
